The septoplasty procedure typically involves re-positioning or removing uneven areas the cartilage of the septum to adjust and correct the deviation. In more serious cases, it may be necessary to perform nose surgery, to make adjustments to bone also.

At VIP in The Villages septoplasty procedures are performed under local anesthesia. The surgeon will first raise the mucosa, (the moist lining of the nostrils) lining off the bone and cartilage inside the nostrils. With the cartilage and bone exposed, the surgeon can then begin to straighten the septum by reshaping or removing portions of it to center the septum and open both nostrils equally. After the correction is made, the mucosa lining is reattached. Splints are typically used to retain the septum in its new position because cartilage tends to have a memory and tries to return to it’s previous position and shape. After about 1 week the splints will be removed.
